April 2008
Week of the Young Child - April 14 - 18
As many of you know this special week is reserved to celebrate our young children across the country. Here at Davis the teachers plan a special event or activity each day. We will kick off the week on Monday with crazy hair and wacky t-shirt day. Tuesday we will host a parent breakfast at drop off time. Wednesday we will have city and construction vehicles here. Thursday is "Literacy Night" at Davis. On Friday children three and older will go to a concert with Colleen and Uncle Squatty at North High School.
This year Julie our Hopper teacher, has organized a Scholastic book fair to take place all week in the lobby. More information coming soon to your child's mailbox!
NAEYC Update
Hopefully you have been tracking the progress of our accreditation deadlines on the timeline outside my office. The teachers and I have been working very hard to get everyone's portfolios edited and ready for the assessment visit. Classroom observations and tours have been completed as well. These serve as tools to indicate what classrooms or age groups need additional materials, wall displays, or equipment to bring them up to the NAEYC standards.
Our application has been accepted and I am now awaiting the arrival of our candidacy materials. I will have 8 weeks to complete this section, this will prove to NAEYC that we are ready and worthy of their visit. We will be asking you to do a final family survey within a couple of weeks. Prior to that you will be receiving information on various policies and procedures not clear to some of you. Again, your participation is crucial in this team effort of our facility.
Child Development Days
For children ranging in age from two and a half to four,  you have been invited to participate in this city wide event. I can't emphasize enough the importance of you taking advantage of this opportunity. Your child will be assessed in a variety of different development areas through various learning stations set up in the Rec. Dept. I encourage you to accept this as another pair of eyes assessing your child's abilities. There will be a variety of information tables set up for families in our community.
Spring is here?
I am sure we are all in agreement that we are thrilled to see the snow melting. However with melted snow comes puddles and mud and I think we all know where our children like to spend their time! Our teachers do their best in keeping 8 - 24 children in dry, clean outer and inside wear. We clearly do not have the laundry facility to wash and dry all of these clothes everyday. Please keep your children's extra clothes bin loaded with socks and pants in particular. We do our best to keep the 140 children here enjoying outdoors. Remember the toddler motto... Mud and Muck is our friend!
Family Spring Fling Event
We were pleased to welcome approximately one third of you to our March 13th Family Fun Night. All of the children and parents had lots of fun with eggs! Children were able to color eggs, watercolor eggs, search for eggs, and decorate and eat an Easter-shaped cookie donated from our friends at U Bake.
Check out our new family recipe exchange in the lobby. Bring in a recipe, give to Kelly or Laurie, and we will make copies as needed to rotate.
